Serita Backstrand, PsyD is a post-doctoral psychologist resident who received her doctorate in clinical psychology from George Fox University. Dr. Backstrand has extensive training and five years of experience in the assessment and treatment of clients of all ages. She has worked as a full-time psychotherapist, offering individual and group therapy, as well as a full-time evaluator. She has experience assessing and treating individuals with various presenting problems, such as Depression, Anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Psychotic Disorders. She has worked in a shelter for at-risk youth, the special education school setting, outpatient counseling centers, and forensic private practice.
Dr. Backstrand’s professional interests include assessment of parenting to help struggling parents improve their skills and competence, and to facilitate a healthier home environment for children. She is interested in psychological and neurocognitive evaluation to determine recommendations for clients to navigate their lives in an effective manner, as well as psychosexual and violence risk assessments to determine recommendations for improved client functioning and community safety. Within the treatment realm, Dr. Backstrand uses Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques to decrease symptoms, increase insight and coping, and improve clients’ psychosocial functioning.
Dr. Backstrand is currently available for therapy on a case by case basis, although she focuses primarily on forensic and neuropsychological assessment. She performs risk assessments, psychosexual evaluations, and psychological and neurocognitive evaluations on children, teens, and adults, as well as parental capacity evaluations for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).
